In 2023, Mac Engel was named one of the top sports columnists in the country by the nation’s most prestigious sports journalism organization, the Associated Press Sports Editors. He was named one of the Top 10 columnists during the APSE's judging in Feb. of 2023. 

In 2022, Engel was named the top Sports Columnist in Texas by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors (APME) in the largest category for a second consecutive year. He also finished second in the General Columnist category by the Texas APME in 2021.

He has worked for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for more than 20 years. He has covered the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys as a beat writer for several years, as well as every major college in Texas.

He has also covered multiple Rose Bowls, Cotton Bowls, Summer Olympics and countless other major sports stories and events.

Engel has written on travel, music, entertainment, political issues and an array of other topics and interests. He also has a podcast, The Engel Angle, where he interviews people from all walks.

Engel also was a contributing member, twice a week, on the Shan and RJ Show from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD) in Dallas for three years.

He served as an adjunct professor at the Schieffer School of Journalism at TCU for 10 years. He served in a similar role at SMU since 2019.
